It happened again. Ogres entered our house and were driven out by local bean-throwing heros shouting, "Out with the demons, in with good fortune".
(Read: We turned out the lights, put on masks and terrified our children who were crying too hard to throw the soybeans, so we took off the masks, turned on the lights, and ate the beans.)
While we were celebrating Setsubun and eating makizushi, others were ringing in the new year with dragon dances and predicting the future with giant rodents. Relatively speaking, teaching our kids to exorcise demons hardly seems strange. And the beans are rather tasty.
Here's to the year of the rabbit. May your winter be short and your fortunes be great.
